Sherkin Island Marine Station

Natural History Data
from Roaringwater Bay and Surrounding Areas

Sherkin Island Marine Station is a small independent research station in southwest Ireland, situated on 16 acres at the northwest corner of Sherkin Island, Co. Cork. It was founded in 1975 by Matt Murphy and his late wife Eileen to record, for future generations, baseline data on the flora and fauna of Sherkin Island and the surrounding area, and to raise awareness of the marine environment in Ireland.

Until 2015, the Station carried out long-term monitoring programmes on flora and fauna. It was made possible with the help of many volunteers over the lifetime of the Station.
